Welcome to our newest team member, Eunice!

ʻUluʻulu has been lucky enough to gain yet another new member to our team. This spring we welcomed Eunice as a part-time Archive Project Assistant. Since we are already in the summer, we realized we needed her new team member interview. We’re so happy to have you, Eunice!

Tell us about yourself and what you’re doing with the ʻUluʻulu Archive.

I have joined ‘Uluʻulu as an Archives Project Assistant after a lifetime of engaging in various aspects of creative work for various industries. My lifelong childhood goal was to work in animation– to write the story, direct the film, draw the storyboards and concept art, and even write the music. I majored in animation & digital arts and minored in songwriting at the University of Southern California. But now, I am pivoting from creation to preservation. My archival interests are specifically in digital assets management, metadata and preservation. I still like to engage in writing and producing music for media, playing piano, illustration and other digital creative projects. 

What brought you here to ‘Ulu‘ulu? 

I am career pivoting into information sciences, and hoping to work in archives. My background is already steep with film and media, so working in a moving image archive is perfect. 

Tell us a little about your position and what you do. And what projects are you working on at ‘Ulu‘ulu?

My position as the Archives Project Assistant consists of supporting the needs of the staff. Currently, I am helping the Processing Archivist with inspection and inventory of AV materials from various collections for the vault reorganization project. This will likely be my main project for this job. 

Is there anything that has been surprising or unexpected about the work?

Sometimes, I go slower than expected because of the condition of the item. There was a fair amount of mold on some of these U-Matics from the 1980s!  Also, I find myself asking more clarifying questions about the condition of items than expected. It’s good to get second opinions. 

Now that  you’ve been at the archive for a little while, have you found a favorite aspect?

Once you get over the mold and grime, processing is quite therapeutic. Haha. I also like being very detailed with my metadata on the spreadsheets.  But since processing is the only task I’ve done so far, maybe you should ask me again at the end of the year!

Since we are a moving image archive we like to talk about what we’re watching. Is there anything you’re watching right now, or have watched recently, that you recommend? Or perhaps a favorite film to recommend? 

A difficult question. These  were watched a long time ago, but it left an impression. “The Wailing” (2016) directed by Na Hong-Jin. And “Shutter Island” (2010) directed by Martin Scorsese.
